But since then 2nd gear has become notchy when cold, presumably down to a change in oil weight. Good to go after 10 minutes mind you! I've never had 100% confidence in the box, hopefully skunk2 improves feel.

Seems to be a 'feature' of them. If its anything more than that then something could be amiss. You might find a change of oil helps, though that doesnt seem to improve things for everyone. Granny shifting and making sure the clutch is to the floor before gear selection. This is through -40°C harsh Canadian winter without much of a warm up.
